Sheesh! Everybody’s doing it already. Drop shipping that is. Well, not everyone, but there’s a heck of a lot of people out there and, dang it, some of them are trying to sell exactly the same item as you.
So, how do you stand out from the crowd? Here are some tips:
· Do your own thing. Most drop shippers or manufacturers will give you photos and product descriptions – the same ones they give to everyone else. Get a product sample, do your own photos, write your own description.
· Maybe get more than a single sample; buy a few. If demand is so good, perhaps even your drop shipper will run out of inventory temporarily and then there are going to be a lot of red faced sellers. But not you because you bought three or four standbys yourself didn’t you? You can ship them, collect the positive feedback and then suspend your listing till the item is back in stock!
· Cut-out the middlemen. Make sure the distribution chain between you and the manufacturer or drop shipper is as short as possible – direct is perfect. Anyone between you and the supplier (i.e., the guy with the product in his warehouse) is going to add to your costs and cut your profit. Their cut is your cut, if you see what we mean. Plus the more people there are in the supply chain, the more chances there are for things to go wrong and the more difficult it will be to put them right!
· Do your market research to find out what is selling well and which wholesaler is selling at the lowest price. Tune in to what’s hot on eBay radio (link ) and Product Sourcing Radio for market trends, new products and live interviews.
· Keep your costs down. Don’t pay a monthly fee to a drop shipper. Most charge a fee for each item they ship, which covers their costs. If they want a monthly retainer fee in addition, move on.
· Make customer service your number one rule. Enough said.
