Don't Forget...You'll Need A Sales Tax ID

In order to do business with a REAL Wholesale Suppler, you will need to supply a "Sales Tax ID number".

This is called different things in different states in the US, but the reason you need it is simple. REAL Wholesaler Suppliers are not going to charge you any tax on the products they ship to your customer. At the end of the year, they have to show the IRS why they did NOT charge you that tax.

Your "Sales Tax ID number" proves that YOU are collecting sales tax on your customers' purchases. The general rule is that you only collect sales tax on the products shipped to addresses in the state where your business resides, but you should check to be sure how this is done in your own state.

The Wholesale Supplier keeps a copy of your "Sales Tax ID number" on file, so that they are not liable for the tax on the products shipped to your customers.

Every state has a web site listing information about the tax rules in that state, and where you can obtain your "Sales Tax ID number". You can click on your home state below to go to that site, and get the information you need.

Sell What Sells!

Sell what Sells, NOT what's Cool

by Chris Malta & Robin Cowie , Courtesy of Worldwide Brands

Our company publishes the Internet’s leading Database of genuine wholesale suppliers. We list thousands of “Drop Shippers” (wholesalers who ship products, one at a time, directly to your customers; eliminating the need to stock inventory), and thousands of Light Bulk Wholesalers - Wholesale Suppliers who will sell to you in small Bulk Quantities, while still giving you larger Bulk Quantity prices. As a result of the information we research and publish, we get questions all the time about what products Home-based Internet Business owners should try to sell online.

Lemonade  I’ve been at this for years, and have become very successful in my Internet business. But let’s face it, folks. If I knew what was going to sell well on the Internet tomorrow, next week, or next month, I wouldn’t be writing this article. I would have retired and purchased a small private island by now. In the retail business, whether you are online, in a physical store in the local mall, or at a roadside stand, it makes no difference; choosing the products you are going to sell is always the hardest part of getting started.
I can’t whip out a crystal ball and tell you what to sell. However, I can tell you about the biggest mistakes that I see new Home-based Internet businesspersons making, all the time.

Visit Worldwide Brands and dicover thousands of wholesale and dropshipped products!

Yaba, Daba...Doba?

Doba1 Some companies in the wholesale business have been slammed for passing themselves off as drop-shippers when really they’re just aggregators.

Let’s explain:

A drop-shipper is someone with a warehouse full of products they will sell individually at wholesale prices to you and ship direct to your customer. Three people in this equation: You -> the drop-shipper -> Your customer.

An aggregator is someone without a warehouse, a middleman who acts on your behalf by dealing with the drop-shipper. Four in this equation: You -> the aggregator -> the drop-shipper -> the customer.

Oh-oh. Looks like someone in the middle could be taking a slice of your profits.

Not so, says top aggregator Doba.

For a start, they’re upfront, telling website visitors exactly what they do and that they don’t have any warehouses.

Second, Doba says it makes its money from membership subscriptions and does not take a cent from your profit margin.

Third, by combining all members’ purchases – that’s ‘aggregating’, yay! – Doba can actually leverage lower wholesale prices from the supplier than you’d be able to get by yourself.

Add to that, you only need deal direct with one company instead of many different drop-shippers for your  bucket-loads of different products, and using an aggregator could start to make sense, especially if it’s the only eBay certified drop-ship service provider, which is what Doba claims to be.

More Complex than Simplx??

Hmmm. Before you visit www.simplx.com try Googling the name of this product sourcing company and make up your mind in the raging debate about the way they do business.

There has to be a reason why Provo, Utah, based Simplx claims to be “the fastest growing product sourcing company in the world” and “the single largest source in the world for drop-shipping discount products.”

It works something like this:

·         When you join, you become a Simplx Authorized Broker, which gives you access to discounted prices at hundreds of retailers.

·         You decide which product(s) you want to sell and, using Simplx resources and training, establish which retailer will give you the best deal.

·         Using your Simplx credentials you place your order with the retailer who ships direct to your customer and charges you the discounted price, which Simplx says can be up to 95% off retail

·         Simplx also picks up a commission from the retailer based on the overall number of orders placed through its services and passes this back to you through a rebate program.

The advantages, says Simplx, include the facts that, with links to all those retailers, your product is never out of stock, you get discounts that  often aren’t available elsewhere, and the choice of products is vast.

The Dropshipping Edge!

Sheesh! Everybody’s doing it already. Drop shipping that is. Well, not everyone, but there’s a heck of a lot of people out there and, dang it, some of them are trying to sell exactly the same item as you.

So, how do you stand out from the crowd? Here are some tips:

·         Do your own thing. Most drop shippers or manufacturers will give you photos and product descriptions – the same ones they give to everyone else. Get a product sample, do your own photos, write your own description.

·         Maybe get more than a single sample; buy a few. If demand is so good, perhaps even your drop shipper will run out of inventory temporarily and then there are going to be a lot of red faced sellers. But not you because you bought three or four standbys yourself didn’t you? You can ship them, collect the positive feedback and then suspend your listing till the item is back in stock!

·         Cut-out the middlemen. Make sure the distribution chain between you and the manufacturer or drop shipper is as short as possible – direct is perfect. Anyone between you and the supplier (i.e., the guy with the product in his warehouse) is going to add to your costs and cut your profit. Their cut is your cut, if you see what we mean. Plus the more people there are in the supply chain, the more chances there are for things to go wrong and the more difficult it will be to put them right!

·         Do your market research to find out what is selling well and which wholesaler is selling at the lowest price. Tune in to what’s hot on eBay radio (link ) and  Product Sourcing Radio for market trends, new products and live interviews.

·         Keep your costs down. Don’t pay a monthly fee to a drop shipper. Most charge a fee for each item they ship, which covers their costs. If they want a monthly retainer fee in addition, move on.

·         Make customer service your number one rule. Enough said.

Let's talk Wholesale Pricing...

Most people think there are just two prices for an item – wholesale and retail.

Not true.

First, there’s the price a manufacturer charges wholesalers who buy massive volumes of product.

Then, there’s the amount wholesalers will charge for selling sizeable volumes of the same item to a retailer. This will be quite a bit less than he’s going to charge for one-off sales to you as part of a drop shipping operation. But because he’s going to be doing a lot of those one-off sales, he can still sell them at a discount. Which is how you make your profit.

In between, some wholesalers will sell small or ‘light’ bulk lots. For low-priced items you can often buy in bulk and still make change out of $500.

Onesource Then there are liquidation wholesalers, who dispose of manufacturers’ stock, often big brand names, at rock bottom prices, and importers who are moving new lines that have just arrived on our shores.

You can find all of these levels explained at Worldwide Brands, the leading source for contacts with drop shippers and wholesalers.

Where you plug in to the price point depends on the degree of risk you are going to take as a seller, in terms of the volume you’re prepared to buy. Generally speaking, the more you buy, the less you pay per item.

Although wholesale prices through drop shipping may be higher than if you bought in bulk, the key advantage is that you are taking little or no risk with this route. Your only outlay may be a listing fee for an online auction. If the item doesn’t sell you’ve learned an interesting lesson, but at least it wasn’t an expensive one!

What should you sell?

Got your finger on it? The pulse, that is.

Don’t expect to get ahead in the online sales game unless you know not only what’s selling well today but also what’s going to hit the big time tomorrow.

Stay one step ahead of the competition by spotting new trends. For example, some drop shippers are now offering personalization of products – name engraving and branding off off-the-shelf items – and you could be among the first to offer this as a retail service. (All the personalization is done by the wholesaler).

So, how do you stay in front?

Finding Holy Cow Wholesale is a good starting point but there’s a whole cattle-pasture full of sites, books and other publications that will keep you in the picture and make sure you don’t step in the you-know-what.

Pulse Some, like WhatDoISell.com or the eBay research specialists Terapeak.com, will keep you informed – for the price of a monthly subscription – or for a free instant snapshot of what’s currently red hot try the eBay Pulse at http://pulse.ebay.com/. There are gallons of other free online resources too, like ecommercetimes.com, trendhunter.com and internetsales.com. Just Google it.

Just as important as following the product trends, is knowing where you can source items at the right price. This is where you need to be extra careful and Google doesn’t necessarily provide you with the right answers. There are many organizations, thousands probably, claiming to be suppliers and drop shippers when really they are middlemen. They may even be legit but what they are doing is taking an order from you, when they don’t really hold the stock, and just transferring it to a genuine drop shipper. The difference between what they charge you and what they pay the drop shipper is their profit – and it should be yours!

Where do I Sell my Dropship/Wholesale Products?

What’s the first name that comes to mind when you think of online selling?

A (cow) pat on the back if you said eBay. Yes, it is the number one source for online sales (by number of individual items sold) , and probably one of the best, but it’s by no means the only place where you can sell your drop shipped or wholesale products. There are lots of udders. :>0. get it?

Auction.com is a popular sales site that, unlike eBay, does not charge a listing fee or a commission. Instead, you pay a monthly fee and can list as many items as you want. Another site that doesn’t charge a listing fee is uBid.com, which used to focus on electronics but now covers the whole range of consumer stuff. There are plenty more too – like Yahoo Auctions, Bidz.com and even good ol’ Amazon. For a list of the most popular sites, including a breakdown by sales category, visit http://www.100auctionsites.com/

There are also churns-full of non-auction sites where you can list and sell your drop shipped products. eBay even has its own classified site – kijiji.com – but the biggest of them all is craigslist.org, a network of community-based classified sites. Your local newspaper possible has an online classified site too.

Of course, you can open a shop front online and sell from your own website. But, if you do this, you will need an ecommerce sales solution – with shopping cart, inventory management and, probably, the ability to handle credit card sales. If you’re new to online selling, it’s not the place to start....auction sites are easier and more profitable! If you are interested in selling through your own online store , we'll provide that information in just a bit!

Your house, Their house or the Warehouse?

Although drop shipping can take all the strain of stock-buying and stock-holding off your shoulders, it’s just possible that maybe you want to buy a chunk of inventory – perhaps to get the higher profit margins that come from bulk-buying or because you got a great discount buy-now deal from an overstocked manufacturer.

What if you could find someone who will do both of those things for you – and keep track of your stock? It’s just possible a manufacturer will store the stuff for you at their place but they won’t want to do that for long and they’re unlikely to want to help with the shipping.

The people who will are fulfillment companies – giant warehouses, who will also take care of the shipping.

Now, when you buy, you can have your order shipped to the warehouse instead of your 24-hour storage lock-up. They’ll let you know when it arrives, barcode the stuff and ship it out, piece by piece, to whomever, whenever you tell them. They’ll usually handle any returns for you as well.

Costs? Well, there’s going to be a charge to set up an online link between you and them and then there’ll be a monthly fee, so the service is only really suited to large-scale retailing. But, if that’s you, just think of all the space and hassle you’re going to be saving yourself.

Amazon Guess who just jumped on this bandwagon? Amazon! Your business should focus on customers and sales - not fulfillment. With this innovative new service, your inventory and orders are processed using the same system used by Amazon.com. When a customer places an order we pick, pack and ship it. No more complicated warehouse and inventory management software. No more worrying about how you’re going to get all those items packed before the pickup time. No more hassles with shipping companies. Just let Amazon do all of it!

After 10 years and millions of orders and customers, Amazon has created one of the most advanced fulfillment networks in the world and your business can now benefit from our expertise.

Quick Facts about Fulfillment by Amazon :

Fulfillment by Amazon can be used for Amazon.com orders or orders from other channels, your own Web site, or even catalog and in-store retail sales. Sellers own and control their Fulfillment by Amazon inventory at all times; you can send more or request returns at any time. Fulfillment fees are charged to the seller at the time of a sale. Dropshippers and Wholesalers

How’s your garage doing? Or the lock-up storage unit? Can you see a darn thing in there or is it full, full, full from floor to ceiling with novelties and frivolities that you plan to sell online?

And what about the old wallet and that worn-out credit card? Are they crying out for mercy as you build up your stock of gifts, equipment and must haves that your customers, well, must have? (You hope).

Stop right there. You should be using dropshippers!

Done right, it’s the neatest thing that ever happened to retailing, relieving you not only of the need to provide inventory storage space but also of the need to have any inventory at all! Hey, and you don’t even need to do the shipping!

Drop shipping is a service in which you, the retailer, do not stock the goods you sell but instead transfer your orders to a wholesaler who ships directly to the customer. You sell, they send. You buy wholesale and sell retail.

The wholesaler makes his profit by buying at even lower prices because he’s ordering large quantities. He owns the inventory and takes the risk. You just pay for the individual items you sell. And you don’t pay until you get paid.

You never need see or touch the product, though experts do recommend buying a couple yourself. And because you don’t provide the storage space and don’t have to finance inventory, you can ‘stock’ (i.e., sell!) as many different items as you like, though offering too wide a range can cause you management problems.

Of course, you may not make as much profit as if you owned the whole inventory yourself because, though you’re getting a big discount, you’re not paying the bulk wholesale prices you’d get if you were buying in quantity up-front. But nor are you taking the risk of being left with surplus stock.

The service is usually invisible to a buyer. The wholesaler will use a shipping label with your trading name and often will even handle returns for you. Naturally, they charge a fee for this service.

Your task is to do the math – add your wholesale price, the drop ship fee, shipping costs, listing fee and commission (if any) and subtract them from the retail price you will charge. If there’s a plus-sign at the end of that calculation, that’s your profit margin.

We have found the absolute largest list of available dropsippers anywhere...and this list is updated DAILY!

Doba and Dropshipping

Using Drop Shipping to Expand into New Markets
by Stuart Lisonbee, Doba Education Specialist

For retail businesses, expanding into a new market can be a risky proposition. Aside from additional marketing costs, there are also the costs of storing new inventory that may or may not sell.

This is just one more situation where drop shipping can help save you time, money, and a lot of unwanted stress. Just like drop shipping is a low risk way to break into the retail business, it can also help your existing business get its feet wet in new markets.

Let's take a look at an imaginary online retailer that sells camping equipment. For years, this retailer has focused on specializing in tents and sleeping bags only. Now, to increase sales and profits, he wants to expand into more camping accessories such as cookware, backpacks, propane, emergency equipment, and so forth. The problem is...

Doba Responds to Scam Accusations

This is a special excerpt from the January 2008 Doba Newsletter by Jeff Knight: Vice-President, Marketplace - Doba. This excerpt helps describe exactly what Doba provides for retailers & suppliers and why those who don't understand might claim "scam."

From time to time, we field questions or concerns from customers who have read something negative about Doba. This month, we want to address what Doba is as well as what we are not.

In marketing one of the easiest ways to position your product's value, is to put it in contrast to the leading product, solution or service. In essence, instead of explaining what their product, or service is, the marketer focuses on what someone else's is not. In politics, candidates do this all the time. The idea is simple: by accusing their opponent of discretions or inconsistencies, they take the attention off their own message. If it works, it makes the mudslinger seem like a genuine 'good guy'. While it may not be the strongest long-term strategy; it is a quick and dirty way to promote your product.

If you do a search for Doba, or even drop shipping, you will see pages of results that include Doba. Some of the results are sponsored by Doba and by its affiliates. In addition to these results, you will undoubtedly see results stating, "Doba is a Scam." In general, these results are sponsored by marketers or affiliates of competing solutions who are employing the mudslinging strategy and using Doba's name to garner more traffic and customers. However, their claims are almost always unfounded or misguided. The reason most cited for Doba being a "scam", is "Doba is not a wholesaler!" Ironically, we never claim to be wholesaler.

If Doba is not a wholesaler, then what is Doba? Doba is a technology company with a product souring software platform. The software platform aggregates different wholesaler, distributor, and manufacturer products, inventory and order information into a common, standardized platform which retailers use to research, list and hopefully, resell products directly to their consumers. In addition, Doba's platform includes software tools that allow the retailer to organize and filter literally millions of products and manage their back office functions such as order fulfillment and fraud. All monthly fees are based upon the data the retailer wants and sophistication of the back office tools they require. Any website or consultant who tells the retailer that they can easily work directly with hundreds of wholesalers is lying or at minimum, providing an overly simplistic view of retail.

While all wholesalers may have the same basic information, none of them store it and provide it to retailers in exactly the same way. That means a retailer who wishes to work with more than one supplier still needs to standardize product data into a common format in order for it to be useful. Furthermore, the retailer needs the technical ability and resources required to make this process automated (or at minimum, replicable) so they don't start over from scratch each day. Once the data is standardized into a common format, the retailer still needs to filter and organize it into meaningful results. The 'shotgun approach' of just blasting entire feeds into search engines/marketplaces and hoping that the end-user finds the gem within the list is a naïve and ineffective merchandising strategy. In addition, keeping your front facing data in sync with your back-office functions can be a nightmare.

Without Doba, a retailer would need to create working relationships with all the suppliers they want to work with. Whether cold-calling or going to tradeshows, each supplier needs to be contacted and a working relationship needs to be started. While some wholesalers and distributors embrace drop shipping, many are very hesitant to enter retailer relationships that have not proven themselves. The retailer may have all the resources and technical ability they need to successfully integrate with the wholesaler, but that doesn't mean that the wholesaler will embrace working with the retailer. Most successful wholesalers (like any successful business) have very little time to evaluate all the requests they receive and will spend most of their energies working on relationships that have the quickest, easiest, most strategic return on investment.

From a practical standpoint, Doba sells packages ranging from $49 to $149 a month; however, the value of Doba is not just the margin from wholesale product sales, but also an elimination of the costs it takes to produce sales. For example, a employee being paid $10 per hour costs an organization roughly $1,600 a month without considering insurance, workman's compensation, and overhead - not to mention the cost of employee learning the ropes, making mistakes and working at less than 100% capacity. One of the biggest barriers small businesses run in scaling their operations, is under-valuing their time and costs initially and running into trouble as the costs of those extra personnel, resources, etc., begin to grow.

The most experienced and largest retail organizations in the world utilize platforms and technologies like Doba. Some use third parties to manage their own inventory and others use software packages that allow them to merchandise more effectively. There is no legitimate reason why the small retailer shouldn't have access to similar tools. In essence, Doba's service levels the playing field for small online retailers by allowing them to employ the same strategies as fortune 500 companies for a fraction of the cost. Is Doba a scam? Of course not. Is Doba the right solution for all online retailers? That depends entirely on the retailer's needs and available resources. Only you can make that ROI decision for your business. However, anyone claiming that there is a 'secret source' is at best, very inexperienced.

Dropship Primer

Question: How can you start a retail business, with no stock, no upfront costs and sell your first product without spending a cent?

Answer: Find the product you want to sell, advertise it on a free-listings day/week/month on eBay and then get someone else to supply it cheap and ship it straight to your buyer who is, of course, paying you the full price.

By the time you pay for it, you’ve received cash from your customer. The difference between what the item cost you and what you received is your profit. Now go back to the beginning and do it again.

Impossible? No, absolutely possible. No bull.

That’s what drop shipping is all about. You work in partnership with one or more wholesale distributors – called drop shippers – who agree to sell at discount to you, on a single item-by-item basis, and ship the items out when they’re sold.

You don’t have to buy in bulk. In fact, you don’t have to buy at all until you’ve sold. And when you sell, you simply tell the distributor and he mails it out to the buyer. You pay him with a credit card and, by the time you’re due to clear that, your incoming payment has arrived.

Of course, there’s a catch or two. Most of the time, you will have to pay a small charge to list an item on eBay but it’s not a lot. You just need to include the listing and commission fees in your profit calculation. And anyway there are other auction sites that don’t charge for listings. (See, ‘Where to Sell…’)

Then you’ve got to find the right drop shipper, with the product you want to sell. Mostly, these are wholesalers – but sometimes also manufacturers – who hold stocks of one or more, sometimes thousands, of items.

You get hold of their product and price lists, establish whether they’ll work with you, identify the product or products you want to sell and, well, you’re good to go.

But you could spend a lot of time finding just the right product to sell at a good profit and tracking down a reputable drop shipper to work with. He’ll also charge a fee, so that needs to go into your calculation too.

But when the bottom line still adds up to a comfortable profit, you’re in business!

Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot of time tracking down products and drop shippers. Most of the work has already been done and is available on line, at a reasonable price.
